Join Effort to Bring Pro-Democracy Scholar Home to his Family in the United States
May 9, 2003
Dear Colleague,
We write to ask you to cosponsor H.Res.199, a House resolution calling on the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to release Dr. Yang Jianli, a pro-democracy activist, world-renowned scholar and U.S. permanent resident who has been detained in China, incommunicado, without access to a lawyer or his family for 13 months -- all in violation of the PRC's own laws.
The attached Op-Ed piece by Jerome Cohen, law professor at NYU and senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Jared Genser, president of Freedom Now, describes Dr. Yang's case and points to the failure of the Chinese government to adhere to its own domestic laws, and its refusal to follow international standards, with regard to Dr. Yang.
Over the past year, members of the House and Senate from both parties have written to the Chinese government and discussed directly with government officials the status of Dr. Yang's case, whereabouts and health -- and to date, his wife and children, all U.S. citizens, do not know where he is or what the charges are against him.
H.Res.199 also urges the Administration to continue its efforts on behalf of Dr. Yang, although the measure is itself in part a response to the State Department's suggestion that Congress also continue to press the government of the People's Republic of China directly on Dr. Yang's case.
If you have any questions, or would like to cosponsor this resolution, please call or email Daniel McGlinchey (Rep. Frank, x 53548) or Paul Wilkinson (Rep. Cox, 56168).
