Dear Clergy Associate,

Dr. Yang Jianli, a member of All Saints Parish, was detained in China on April 26, 2002. Dr. Yang has been a prominent spokesman for human rights for all ethnic groups in China and he is the founder of The Foundation for Democracy in China in the 21st Century. His family waits without word of his status or whereabouts, despite the efforts of congressional leaders, such as Representative Barney Frank, and human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International.

As the anniversary of his arrest approaches, we ask Brookline congregations to join us in a Prayer Vigil on Friday, April 25th, at 7 p.m. on the steps of All Saints Parish. Your presence will give great support to Dr. Yang's wife, Christina Fu, and their two children, Aaron and Anita (age 7 and 10). We ask that you bring the Vigil to the attention of your congregation and ask for them to join us as well. If you or members of your congregation are unable to attend the Vigil, please consider signing a petition on Dr. Yang's behalf. We would be happy to provide you with background materials and/or a spokesperson to present the petition to your membership (see enclosures).

In these difficult days, it could be easy to lose the sight of one, among many, who is suffering. Thank you for considering the situation of Jianli. He is beloved to our parish community and to the town of Brookline. He is the very best example of a citizen of the world. Please join us in working for his freedom and safe return.

Prayerfully,

The Rev. David Killian
