Activist's Location In China UnknownJohn Pomfret Saturday, June 29, 2002 BEIJING, June 28 -- A U.S.-based Chinese activist detained in China in April was formally arrested this month, but Chinese police have yet to tell his family where he is, his brother said today. The tactic means that Chinese security personnel will be able to keep the activist, Yang Jianli, in isolation without access to an attorney. Yang, who sneaked into China this spring to meet with striking workers in the northeast, was formally arrested on June 2, according to his brother, Yang Jianjun. Police did not say what crimes Yang Jianli allegedly committed. -------------------------- |
