Spy trial opens in Beijing

An American-based Chinese scholar has gone on trial behind closed doors in Beijing, charged with illegal entry and spying for Taiwan.

Yang Jianli - who is prominent in pro-democracy circles - has denied the charges.

He is alleged to have used a friend's passport to enter China and to have travelled around the country with a fake identity card.

The trial comes a week after the United States Senate condemned Yang JIanli's 15 month detention and called for his release.

Democrat Congressman, Barney Frank says resolutions are not enough.

"I think we have made the mistake often in the US of worrying that if we press these human rights cases, the Chinese will somehow be angered," he says.

"I believe China needs the US much more than we need China.

"I think it's in the interest of the world for there to be harmonious US-Chinese relations.

"But I don't think we ought to see this as a one-way street," the congressman says.
